Reusables and refillables during COVID
Back in March 2020, the Coronavirus pandemic led national cafe chains such as Costa, Cafe Nero and Starbucks refusing to accept reusable coffee cups in an attempt to prevent the spread of the virus.
This comes at a time where in the UK:
- we use 7 million disposable coffee cups every day and 2.5 billion every year
- an appalling 700,000 plastic bottles are littered every single day
- plastic bottles now make up one-third of all plastic pollution in the sea and there are now over 159 plastic bottles for every mile of beach
So thankfully in July a group of over 100 scientists confirmed that it is safe to use reusable containers during the pandemic, as long as strict cleaning procedures are in place.
Plastic Free Chesterfield want to ensure that the plastic pollution crisis does not become worse through a furthering littering of disposable containers.
